NY Times Anti-Virus Blooper
In May, The New York Times published an article in the Gadgetwise section recommending to disable your anti-virus to speed up your computer. While there are anti-virus programs that do slow down your machine, we do NOT recommend you work on your computer without anti-virus protection. Read more at Computerworld's blog, as well as view the original article. As we've stated many times, we recommend AVG virus protection. It's free for personal use, and it works (and, it won't slow down your computer like other programs do)!

Conficker Computer Worm
Many of you have heard about the Conficker computer worm that can infect your computer and spread itself to other computers across a network automatically, without human interaction.
Most antivirus software can detect and block the Conficker worm, so if you have updated antivirus software on your computer, you are at a much lower risk of being infected by the Conficker worm.

XP Update
Although Microsoft's Vista Operating System (OS) has been out for over a year, XP has continued to be a popular OS since Vista has had a few hiccups along the way. As of 6/30/08, XP retail edition is no longer available. Some of the challenges people have faced with Vista include:
Increased need for memory, decreasing machine speed (older computer platforms with 1 GB of memory or less have struggled with the robust Vista OS).
Software compatibility.
Windows XP drivers not compatible with the new Vista OS, creating work locating the correct drivers.
Overall, if you are purchasing a new machine, Vista is the way of the future so be sure to purchase a machine with a minimum 2GB of memory. But don't worry, if you truly have not jumped on the Vista bandwagon yet, Microsoft will be supporting XP until 2014.
